Shower Singers Welcome!

We always love a bit of science here at Soul of the City Choir – especially when it comes to the benefits of singing.  For a choir that bills itself as particularly welcoming to shower singers, we thought you’d like to read for yourselves why you need to turn on the tap and turn up the volume – for the good of your health obviously!

The Stars Look Very Different Today…

Week 2 of the new term and we welcomed another lovely group of newbies to the choir.  Whilst we’re busy celebrating being back, we’re also very sad at the loss of the exceptional talent that was David Bowie this week.  As a tribute to him and his amazing body of work we’ll be trying out a little Bowie number this term – woohoo

Hello January!

We can’t tell you how lovely it is to be back singing this week.  Nothing blasts away those post-christmas winter blues better than a good old sing and we’ve got some great songs this term for both choirs.

This weeks little bit of reading pleasure comes in the form of an article that appears in this months Viva Brighton magazine! Hurrah!  Grab yourself a coffee, sit back and have a little read

Wow what an amazing gig!

Even if we do say so ourselves – it was an amazing gig at All Saints Church last Saturday night with a capacity audience and our 2 fantastic choirs from Brighton and Hassocks singing together in glorious harmony!

As well as having fun we also raised the fantastic amount of £710 for the Alzheimers Society collecting from our super-generous audience.

And we were beautifully supported by the mesmerising guitar playing of local man Chris Marsh – you can follow him on facebook at

Huge thanks to everyone involved and see you next term.  In the meantime we wish a very happy Christmas and a peaceful and healthy New Year to you all

It’s Show Time

Just one more sleep till our amazing Festive fantasia of fun at All Saints Church.  We’re all fired up and ready to go-go and sounding fantastic (even if we do say so ourselves!).  We can’t wait to sing with you and to you!

Vanessa always reminds us of the importance of blending when singing with other people.  We thought you’d like to see an example of how not to do it which has had us all in stitches this week!  There’s a balance to be struck between ‘letting go’ and ‘blending’ – not sure if this little one has quite found it yet!

Nearly out with the old – nearly in with the new!

Can’t quite believe we’re almost at the end of this term with our amazing sold-out Festive gig just around the corner.

Before we get caught up in the christmas mayhem and merriment, don’t forget that the new term starts again on 5th Jan in Brighton and 6th Jan in Hassocks.  Tell your friends, tell your mum, tell your dog – share the good news with everyone and get them to come along (with the exception of the dog maybe?)

And just to get you in the mood here’s a little festive vocal treat for you that delivers a lot of notes for your money!

30 years of Shakey!

Did you know it’s 30 years since the release of Shakin’ Stevens’ Merry Christmas Everyone?  To mark that, not only will we be rocking this tune at our Festive Gig (coincidence?  I don’t think so!) but the man himself has re-recorded the song.  Now called Echoes of Merry Christmas Everyone proceeds from the sale are being donated to The Salvation Army.  If you want the cockles of your heart warming on this Friday afternoon click here for the video of the song

If you’re happy and you know it clap your hands!

Our version of White Winter Hymnal is going to sound amaaaaazing in All Saints Church at our Festive Gig – you can almost smell the mince pies and mulled wine when we sing it!

Everyone seems to have a different idea of what the lyrics are about but this is what Mr Fleet Fox (Robin Pecknold) has to say about the song:

“It’s lyrically fairly meaningless. As an introduction to the record, (this was intended to be the opening track on the album), we thought it would be nice to start it with a simple jam that’s focussed on singing – on the record it starts with a tongue-in-cheek harmony thing that we hoped would make people laugh or something but I think it just confuses them. This is my favorite song to play live, though singing it live is sometimes difficult because the lyrics are so vague. Weird how that works!”

And for those of you who might be struggling a little with the clapping bit here’s a helpful tutorial on how it’s done!

Sold out quicker than Muse!

Yes it’s true folks – we’ve well and truely sold out for our Christmas Charity gig at All Saints Church in Hove on 12th December.  Which means we’ll have an awesome 550 strong audience watching us sing and strut our funky stuff on the night.  Thanks to everyone who bought tickets to make it a fabulous and fitting finale to the term.

If you’re devastated and bereft not to be able to come – we still need stewards for the night so in exchange for a small amount of work before and after the gig you will get in to see us for free.  Email us if you’re interested.

Meanwhile….we’d best get practising!

Christmas gig supporting Alzheimer’s Society

Not long at all now until our fabulous Christmas gig and nearly all the tickets have been sold already.  This year we’ll be supporting the wonderful work of the Brighton Alzheimers Society which supports anyone affected by dementia.  They do everything they can to keep people with dementia connected to their lives and the people who matter most, by way of information and advice, care and support and… coincidentally, ‘Singing for the Brain’ groups.

We ask everyone coming to the gig to dig deep and support their amazing work.
